I saw The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as a teenager, and it remains my favourite film. In the early 1990s, Eli Wallach read Joseph Mitchell's book McSorley's Wonderful Saloon on BBC Radio 4's Book at Bedtime. With his New York accent, Wallach was just right, and his involvement led me to the work of Mitchell a superb writer, recently reprinted by Vintage.
