My friend David Robinson, a Labour councillor in Chester, who has died of heart failure aged 67, was a shining example of a local politician who dedicated his life to public service, driven by a fierce determination to improve the lives of those in need.
He was born and brought up in Chester, then trained as a teacher at Bede College, Durham, from 1964 until 1967. After a stint doing VSO in Nigeria, where David met his wife Monica, he taught geography in two Chester high schools. His classes were always quiet and focused when he wanted them to be, but he had lots of fun, too, gaining tremendous respect from his students. He retired at 50, but his teaching ability was a bonus in his political life, too.
