Paul Shane was discovered by the great actor and writer Brian Glover, who had seen him perform his stand-up act on the northern club circuit. So impressed was Glover with Shane's talent that he wrote a part for him in the Barnsley-set BBC Play for Today Keep an Eye on Albert (1975). I appeared alongside him and remember seeing him in clubs in Yorkshire several times. Keep an Eye on Albert was really a warm-up for Shane's starring role in Glover's drama Summer Season (1976), for the Second City Firsts series, in which Shane played a comedian. As part of the action, Shane's own standup act was filmed to show the character plying his trade.
