Paul Shane was too modest in his summary of his performance in Alan Bennett's A Day Out ("All I had to say was, 'My bum's numb!'"). In a scene at Fountains Abbey, in North Yorkshire, his character explains enthusiastically how a medieval arched bridge has been constructed, and how modern bricklayers wouldn't do it that way. His cycling companion says the bridge would have been made by a monk, to which Shane's character replies "I don't care if he were [the criminal] Charlie Peace – he could lay right bricks." It was a gem of a scene and I'm sure it marked him out for bigger things.
