Lyn Gambles obituary

My friend Lyn Gambles, who has died aged 68, had a blazing career in television, beginning in 1968 as a researcher on Thames TV's weekday magazine show Today and subsequently the weekly current affairs flagship This Week. Later she produced a wide range of programmes. She worked on Tomorrow's World at the BBC and made a series of films on the spice trade before she founded the production company Gambles Milne with Claudia Milne. They produced the current affairs programme 20/20 Vision for Channel 4 from its inception in 1982.

After she left the company, she was part of Inca, a group of independent producers, but television was never going to be enough for Lyn. She not only wrote for both the theatre and the screen but also wrote the libretto for an opera, The Descent of Inanna. It seemed to many of her friends that there was nothing that Lyn could not master. Project followed project. She took up drumming and studied astrology, and for several years she made stained-glass windows, to order, in a workshop behind the Wimbledon greyhound stadium in south-west London.

Born and raised in Lincoln, Lyn joined the Reuters news agency and trained as a journalist after reading politics and economics at Durham University. A few years ago she moved back to Lincoln, where she dedicated herself to writing projects.

She suffered a stroke in 2008 and had been dealing with the consequences of that event for some time. She learned to speak again and walk with a frame until other ailments weakened her.
