As a concertgoer, I very much admired the flute playing of Oliver Bannister. It can be heard on Hallé recordings from the 1950s of which Debussy’s Prélude à l’Après-midi d’un Faune is one, and he produces a remarkable downwards glissando in the opening bars of the fifth movement of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique in both the 1947 and 1959 recordings.
