My former colleague Sally Hardcastle, who has died aged 69, was a newspaper journalist and then a reporter on radio and television. She presented the world business report on the BBC World Service between 2000 and 2008. As the daughter of Bill Hardcastle, a former editor of the Daily Mail and the first presenter of the BBC’s World at One in October 1965, she was steeped in the media world from her earliest days.
A reporter on BBC programmes such as Nationwide, Tonight and The World Tonight (1985-2000), she covered Britain’s accession to the EU, the rise and fall of Thatcherism, and several economic recessions.
