My mother, Connie Sharman, who has died aged 100, came to Britain from the US in the mid-1950s, settling in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, where she made a great contribution to the community. She was a founding member of the local branch of Save the Children in 1959, and continued to be a fundraiser for the charity all her life – attempting to raise £5,000 even in her centenary year.
She taught English to Punjabi women who had arrived in the town in the 70s, helped forge Leamington’s link with Bo in Sierra Leone and was a member of the Oddfellows friendly society and the United Nations Association.
