Vincent Nolan obituary

My father, Vincent Nolan, who has died aged 85, influenced the management style of major companies when he introduced Synectics, a creative problem-solving methodology, to the UK. As well as being a respected leader in his field, he was the much-loved head of his family and had a lifelong passion for classical music, cricket and Everton football club.

The third of four brothers, Vincent was born in Crosby, Merseyside, to Vincent, a travelling salesman, and Eileen, a school headteacher, and grew up in Little Crosby, a predominantly Irish Catholic community. Intellectually curious and a high achiever from a young age, he attended St Marys college, Crosby. He was offered a place to read philosophy, politics and economics at Magdalen College, Oxford, when he was 16.
