I will not forget an address by John Daniel to the National Union of Students conference in 1966. He briefed us on what was facing students and activists in South Africa. He spoke, too, of Robert Kennedys visit. Wanting more detailed information from John, he motioned that they should move outside and started to walk noisily on the veranda, so that any sensitive remarks would be drowned out by the sound of their footsteps. In response to his puzzled look, John told us, Kennedy said, I was attorney general, you know.
