I met Denise Inge in the early 1990s when she accompanied her husband John to the north-east following his appointment as a parish priest in my former parliamentary constituency of Wallsend. For a young American woman from Pennsylvania, industrial Tyneside must have come as a real culture shock. This didn't hold Denise back. Along with John, she provided support and solidarity to a community undergoing significant economic decline and social pressure due to the decline of the shipbuilding industry.
