Ian McIntyre (obituary, 5 June) was appointed as Radio 4 controller to improve its content, particularly in news and current affairs; I was present when he was briefed by senior management. His insistence on higher standards ruffled the feathers of the news and current affairs and drama departments, which did their best to undermine him. They succeeded, although he did not lack support for his ideas in other departments or among the listeners. He brought exceptional clarity of mind and sense of humour to Radios 3 and 4.
