Dan O'Connor was a fine philosophy teacher, and at Exeter presided over an excellent department for this most slippery of subjects. Appearing ascetic, he proved otherwise once you got to know him: I recall him conducting us in play-like readings of Berkeley's Dialogues and Plato's Phaedo.
He warned me that I would find postgraduate philosophy dry, narrow and perhaps something of a disappointment – he was right. The deceptively simple clarity of his thinking was present in everything he said and wrote.
He held both British and Irish passports. Details used to include occupations, but it seems that the Irish language has no direct equivalent for "philosopher". So, decades before Dumbledore, Professor O'Connor was abroad in the world with a passport that declared him a wizard.
