When Margo MacDonald was dumped in an unwinnable position on the SNP list for the 2003 Scottish parliament, I approached her as chair of the Scottish Socialist party and said: "You know, if you joined the Scottish Socialists our members could choose you to head up a list and you could be elected." She smiled and replied: "Thanks very much, Hugh, but I think I can get elected as Margo MacDonald." The journalists dismissed her chances, but I predicted that she could get enough votes to be elected twice over. So it proved, and Margo remained one of the most influential members of the parliament until her death.
