Sally Vincent was wonderfully sharp not only in her journalism but also in person. After I and the old guard of Punch had been thrown out of the magazine, she was one of the freelances kept on for a time – until one of those in charge rang up to inform her that they planned to sack her soon from her post as TV critic. Sally had the greatest pleasure in applying a match to the article she was about to take in, happy in the knowledge that as it was press day there would be no time for anyone to fill the space, let alone see the programmes she wrote about so wittily.
