In the early 1970s, Lewis Collins had major roles at the Citizens theatre in Glasgow in Gogol's The Government Inspector and Marlowe's Tamburlaine. He was quoted at the time as saying, "It is the best theatre in Britain for young talent. Where else do you get to play Tamburlaine at 25?" While in Glasgow he became involved in community work. He described his time teaching drama to deaf children as "the most satisfying work I've done in my life".
