I was at Oxford with Mel Smith in the early 1970s. I got to know him when he directed the Gilbert and Sullivan Society production of Iolanthe, in which I sang Lord Mountararat. He was an unlikely but inspired choice and his production brilliant. I particularly remember his hysterical stand-in rehearsal performance of Private Willis.
